Your first firearm.

No judgment, no hard sell. This is what we tell friends and family when they ask for guidance.

Start with the purpose

Home defense, concealed carry, hunting, and target shooting each point you toward different firearms. Tell us honestly what you're trying to do, and we'll steer you toward 2–3 options that actually fit — not the 'most gun' on the shelf.

Handgun vs long gun

Handguns are more concealable and convenient but harder to shoot well. Long guns (rifles, shotguns) are easier for a new shooter to put rounds on target and are often better suited to home defense. Both have a place — the decision depends on how you plan to use it.

Caliber basics

Bigger isn't always better. 9mm is an excellent all-around handgun caliber — manageable recoil, widely available ammo, effective for defense. For long guns, .22LR is unbeatable for cheap practice; .223 / 5.56 is the most common AR-15 caliber; 12-gauge is the workhorse shotgun chambering.

Reliable platforms

For a first firearm, stick with names that have decades of track record: Glock, SIG Sauer, Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Mossberg, Remington. Police trade-ins are especially good value for new buyers — proven platforms at used prices.

Safe storage

Plan for storage before you bring a firearm home. A basic quick-access safe or lockbox is the minimum if anyone else lives with you. For long-term storage, a proper gun safe protects against theft, fire, and unauthorized access. We sell safes and can recommend sizing.

Training

Owning a firearm is a skill — treat it like one. Virginia has excellent instructors offering basic pistol, home defense, and concealed carry courses. Shoot under a qualified eye before you rely on a firearm in a real situation. Ask us for recommendations in your area.

What to expect in store

Walk into either store and tell a staff member you're buying your first firearm. We'll ask about purpose, budget, and any prior experience. We'll hand you 2–4 options to feel, work the action, and compare. Take your time. There's no pressure to leave with something the same day.
